The magazine was founded by publisher and editor Lovat Dickson and was devoted entirely to the modern short story, bringing together emerging British writers and major international authors during the interwar period.
This issue features a particularly notable contribution from Luigi Pirandello, the Italian Nobel Prize–winning playwright and novelist, with the story Granella’s House. Also included is The Two Brothers by the distinguished British critic and short story writer V. S. Pritchett, whose work later became central to twentieth-century English literature.
Additional stories are contributed by Nancy Hale, Jules Romains, L. A. G. Strong, and others, reflecting the magazine’s aim of presenting a diverse international selection of modern short fiction.
Issues of Lovat Dickson’s Magazine represent an interesting example of the vibrant literary magazine culture of the interwar period, when periodicals played a crucial role in introducing new fiction and translation to English-speaking audiences.
