Proof?

Sorting though a box of newly arrived stock, I came across an unusual copy of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. Not a fine copy with tight bindings, clean pages and little wear but rather the opposite. It's a 1914 copy of the work, translated by Edward Fitzgerald and illustrated by Frank Bragwyn but is unbound and without the illustrations. Closer inspection would suggest the book has never been bound or the illustrations stuck to their pages. Intriguing. Could it have once been a proof copy? Perhaps a little research will reveal all... Will.
